DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The authors of this collective work, from all backgrounds, present a complex and balanced overview of immigration in France, out of intellectual fashions and sterile controversy. The first part of this volume deals with the basic concepts and terminology in order to understand and explain the social dynamics of exile and expatriation. Because the relation between migration - temporary movement of people by definition - and integration - social, economic, political, cultural and even psychological process - is not automatic: immigration does not always lead to integration, and immigrants and foreigner are not the only concerned. After a multidisciplinary inventory of immigrants residing in France, integration processes and obstacles that hinder or this integration, the last two sections deal with with public policies and debates about the entry and settling of people who basically will never leave France.
