TYPE OF PRODUCT:

Statistics

LANGUAGE/S OF PRODUCT:

DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The product is a slides presentation containing tables with statistics about the emigration phenomenon in Romania. There are two main periods under research:1990-2006 and 2000-2006. The statistics are on the age, sex of the Romanian emigrants, on the country of destination (for example: in 1990-1995 8% of the Romanian emigrants chose Italy while in 2002-2006 50% chose Italy), on their level of education (about 75% of the Romanian emigrants are high school graduates and a small percentage, about 4%, have only primary education ), on the way they got a job (the highest percentage, about 27% each, is through friends and relatives already living there). There are also statistics on the Romanian medical staff migration and surveys concerning the reasons for their migration: low salaries – 55%, improper working conditions - 40%.

COMMENTS ON THIS DOCUMENT:

The statistics show who (mostly educated people aged 26-40), why (financial reasons), where (mainly in Italy and Spain) and how Romanians migrate. This means in fact that Romanian people are aware of the historical and economic context and study their options for the best possible life and do everything they can in order to acquire it, even if that means leaving their country and family. Being confined so many decades by the communist regime, the freedom and the possibility to live a more than decent life outside Romania lures Romanians who trust their youth, strength, skills and intelligence to bring them well-paid jobs and other financial and material facilities.
