What is the family memory? Is it running short among the working classes ? How is it passed down ? Is there necessary a benefit to pass it down? These are the issues that “Souvenirs of immigrant families” look back : a collection of testimonies and documents produced by adolescents in a suburb, mainly from immigrant families
This documentaion which is the raw material for this book was developed by one hundred-twenty teenagers from 1997 to 2000, attended an educational workshop on family memory led by three teachers of a Secondary school “Collège Poincaré” La Courneuve, Seine-Saint Denis (Paris).
Based on data collected for 4 years, David Lepoutre analyzes the relationship they have towards their family past based on historical contexts, report on family history based on historical contexts of migration, social class and cultural backgrounds
All these acounts were written by teenagers from families of migrant Asian, Indian, Maghrebin, Caribbean and Zaire, having known one way or another writing.
This educational project of great courage, fieldwork investigation, an attempt to articulate both sociological theory and activist practice,”Memories of immigrants families” offers us innovative insights on "other" practices of memory, fruitful theoretical questions and finally, powerful testimonies. The analysis of practices of memory is subtle, meticulous and rich – doing full justice to a fascinating corpus.
