DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The paper looks comprehensively at the economic theory of migration and its determinants, the trends in and the history of migration to and from Great Britain, the immigration system as at 2001 and the economic and social outcome of migration.

The overall conclusion is that migration tends to promote economic growth.

COMMENTS ON THIS DOCUMENT:

This report is produced for discussion purposes and does not constitute government policy. The section on the immigration system is very useful but it should be remembered that UK policy on immigration is constantly evolving and the paper was prepared in 2001.
