UK Borders Act 2007 c.30
An Act to make provision about immigration and asylum; and for connected purposes.
Key features of the UK Borders Act 2007:
• Powers to detain at ports.
• Biometric immigration documents for those subject to immigration control.
• Provision for claimants to have conditions imposed with respect to residence and reporting to immigration officers or Secretary of State.
• Enhanced enforcement powers of immigration officers to apply to acts committed both within and outside the UK.
• Provision for ‘automatic deportation’ for non-British citizens who are in receipt of certain custodial sentences along with wider powers of detention.
• New powers relating to sharing and seeking information in connection with immigration control, criminal offences and nationality.
• New role of Chief Inspector of the Border and Immigration Agency
• The act is part of a package of measures to underpin new powers awarded to the Border and Immigration Agency.
• There is a substantial increase in enforcement resources and a move to make further use of advancing identity technology.
• New limitations on admissible evidence in appeals against refusal under a points-based immigration rule.
