Population and Society: Five received ideas about Immigration

Answer from a demographer at the "light of available knowledge " given to five misconceptions about immigration in France.
- First received idea: “France would be a "country of mass immigration."
- Second received idea: The fertility rate of France would be largely due to immigrant families.
- Third received ideas: uncountable, illegal immigration would be "countless."
- Fourth received ideas: The official statistics would be unable to count properly the immigrants.
- Fifth received ideas: To host immigration is to accept the "misery of the world."
Immigration has become almost passionate in France. Given the difficulties of making a distinction between facts and ideas without passion, the author's objective is to clear up the major confusions.
His answers, as a researcher at INED, are as follows: "Without reasonable flows control, without effective fight against discrimination (they are rampant in the host environment or in some communities), immigration would not become a "chance for France". Demographers can contribute to the debate by removing the misconceptions. No, immigration is not massive, it is not predominantly illegal, it is neither prolific nor miserable, and not more elusive. It still remains largely to be discovered. «
