The horde, when we were the Albanians. A book about the most common prejudices towards immigrants
Gian Antonio Stella
2002 Milano Rizzoli
Book
Italian
It is an essay about stereotypes and prejudices towards immigrants who are seen as victims of real persecution acts committed by the host community. It is based on documents, news stories, and above all books; it is about Italian emigration to everywhere in the world and it records ill treatments, violence, abuse, exclusion, insults and physical and moral sufferings. In the past, our people emigrated abroad, forced by miserable conditions of life just like Kurds, Albanians, Africans or other desperate fellows do nowadays.
Gian Antonio Stella tells about the sufferings of Italian emigrants, who left the country with sorrow and afflictions even if their hearts were full of hopes and expectations for the future. It is the same for the masses of desperate people coming from eastern and north African countries; they leave homes and miss their families. The writer makes us think about these similarities and appeals to the utmost indulgence and tolerance for the foreigners who come to Italy to look for fortune.
