Romanian
This is the rendition of an undercover Romanian reporter who travels to Italy and tells the stories of various Romanian young men who left Romania for Italy, some 4-10 years before, in search of a better, easier life. These people tried at first to get jobs but that proved difficult because they were not given the soggiorno working permit, so they turned to stealing or to working illegally and they got conned by their employers who refused to pay them the sums of money agreed upon. They lodge in train stations, abandoned houses, trailers or cars, in ports, they eat at social canteens, they steal and they do not want to come back to Romania because they got used to not working.
The article explains the vicious circle of immigration: people immigrate because they want to earn more money and live a better life than in their own countries. If they are not allowed to work they will try other means of making money. Working illegally will turn them into outcasts, though there are people who could use their workforce. The immigrants become complacent to their new status and give up trying to make an honest living.
