Clandestine emigrants, coming from Asia, Middle East or Turkey, use Romania as a transit country trying to cross illegally the border for going to the European Union space. The Geneva Convention (1951), to which Romania adhered, gives the right to any person from any country to seek asylum in another country. These clandestine emigrants pay between 5000-10000$ in order to get to Western countries and they are able to get to transit countries such as Romania because its borders are not properly secured. Once they get here they happily register themselves at the Refugees Office and the Romanian state must provide temporary financial assistance for them. If they get to other countries and are caught they are deported to the country where they are registered as refugees – i.e. Romania.
A poor legislation attracts illicit migrants who will try to take advantage of it and who will cause a lot of damage to that country from a financial (the state will pay to support them), economic (they will open businesses and send the money back to their families in their home countries), social (they will commit crimes knowing they cannot be deported) and political (a country which is not safe) point of view.
